Minecraft challengeUpdate

Chunk = Mob

One random mob waits in each Overworld or Nether chunk you enter. Defeat it before moving on. Even with three players, there is only one mob per chunk.

How to start
  • Java & Bedrock
  • Private server
  • No extra mods

The rule

Kill the mob, then move on

A chunk is an area of 16 × 16 blocks. A mob waits in your starting Overworld or Nether chunk. A mob spawns whenever you enter a chunk, even if you have been there before. Everyone in the same chunk shares one mob. Your borders stay closed while it is alive.

After the kill, you can move on. Staying in the chunk does not immediately spawn another mob. Returning to it does. The boss bar at the top shows the mob and its health. The arrow tells you which way to look. It also shows the distance and whether the mob is above or below you. Your timer stays visible.

This applies in the Overworld and Nether. You can move freely in the End.

Example round: You enter the next chunk. A skeleton spawns and the border closes. You move behind a block, block its arrows with your shield and kill the skeleton. Now you can move on.

A player and a goat stand in the grass inside the blue personal chunk border.
This time, a goat is the chunk mob. Your blue border stays closed while it is alive. Defeat it to move on.

What to expect

The rule
One mob per chunk you enter. Defeat it together to move on.
The mobs
Animals and monsters are included. Your shared wins unlock stronger mobs.
Your goal
Keep working toward your chosen goal. The mobs slow you down along the way.

Before the next chunk

What helps?

You do not know which mob will spawn. Bring food, a weapon and a shield.

01Keep food and a weapon ready
Keep them in your hotbar so you do not have to search your inventory during a fight.
02Watch where you stand
Try not to cross a chunk border beside a drop. Once the mob spawns, you can only dodge within your chunk.
03Follow the arrow
Cannot see your mob? Check the boss bar. Its arrow, distance and height difference help you find it.
04Help each other
Anyone can kill the shared mob. Everyone’s border opens when they do.

Questions about Chunk = Mob

Mobs, difficulty, death and the End.

Which mobs can spawn?

For example, pigs, villagers, zombies, skeletons and endermen. Silverfish and endermites are included too. Squids, fish or nautiluses can appear in water. Your shared wins unlock stronger mobs. A pig or silverfish can still spawn later on.

When do stronger mobs unlock?

Creepers and witches can appear from 4 wins. Iron golems, piglin brutes and wither skeletons join from 8. Blazes, guardians, breezes and shulkers unlock at 12. A ravager can spawn from 16. Evokers, elder guardians, ghasts, phantoms and creakings join at 20. Each shared chunk mob defeated counts once. Passive respawn mobs do not increase the difficulty.

Do mobs gain extra health and damage?

Yes. From 20 wins, combat mobs also get stronger. Their strength rises again at 40, 70 and 100 wins. The boosts stop at 50% extra health, 20% extra speed and 20% extra regular attack damage. Piglin brutes, ravagers and evokers only gain health. Arrows, potions and other special attacks stay unchanged. Passive mobs keep their normal stats.

How does multiplayer work?

Everyone shares one mob per chunk. Defeat it and everyone can move on. Returning to the chunk spawns another mob. If you split up and enter different chunks, each can have its own mob. You are not teleported together.

What happens if I die?

Dying does not count as a win. If teammates are still fighting the shared mob in your respawn chunk, it stays. You get no special protection. Otherwise, you get a passive mob there, such as a pig or villager. Your border stays closed until the mob dies. Passive respawn mobs do not increase the difficulty. Your shared wins are kept.

What happens in the End?

Chunk = Mob is off in the End. There are no chunk mobs or personal borders there. You can move freely, build bridges and fight the Ender Dragon. If the dragon is your goal, that goal stays active.
